Reason Number 1. To avoid feeling UPSET, the lie matters, at least to the person telling the lie.

Reason Number 2. Afraid telling the truth will STOP them from doing what they INTEND to do.

OR

Reason Number 3. They do not want to UPSET other people by NOT meeting their EXPECTATIONS.

OR

Reason Number 4. It is not a lie. IF IT IS FOR their PROTECTION and/or the protection of other people and things they care about.
